A Brief History

Gazebo Meno Cottages

We may not be suitable for everyone . Please read thoroughly before booking or deciding to stay with us. Perhaps with more understanding it'll make your stay more enjoyable.

A Brief History

Gazebo Meno was built in the very early stage of Tourism to Lombok and the Gili Island . It was first conceived as an eco-lodge , hence our building policy :
  • All the trees that was there before we came , is still here today (unless it fell due to natural causes). No single trees was cut to make way for our cottages , this makes the placement of our cottages distant and irregular.
  • We built using only coconut timber (considered more eco friendly and replaceable) . This will cause the building to have cracks and peculiar sound when you walk through it.
  • During the early stage we worked with the islander , concerned occupants , expatriate and leaders of the island to minimize coral destruction practices brought about by reckless fishing and to enhance education (subsidizing teachers for the school) , religion & cultural study. Although tourism has some unwanted effects , it has also brought about more income , more education , accessibility , electricity and perhaps better welfare to the island . Perhaps if you have time to talk to the elders they might still recall the hardship of those early day and the parts that you (as a tourist) and us and all the villages must play .
Water, water, precious water
There is no fresh water source in any part of the Island . Deep well is not allowed to protect the island . All of the fresh water in the island must come by Boats (usually once or twice a week // subject to weather conditions) . Fresh water is precious . We store these water and rain water (very seldom rain) in water holding tanks. You are supplied with drinking water and your shower water is mainly fresh. Toilet flush uses brackish water . This has an effect to your comfort :
  • Towels , Sheets & laundry : Your towel , sheets and laundry is laundered by the villagers using brackish (hard water) water . They are perfectly clean , but may appear old as this water causes discolouration even to new linen supply . We do replace our supply with new linen regularly but even after only 1 week use it will show discoloration (brownish).
  • Hard Water and strong winds also affects even hard stone (you will be able to see it eroded even bricks and hard stone). Overtime this will also affect the appearance of our crockery , cutlery and eating utensils. They are clean with perhaps older appearance . Those with unacceptable appearance is replaced immediately. Notify our staff if you see any that you do not like.
Food supplies
With irregular and seasonal occupancy , and limited storage capacity , many times we ran out of stock and must make do with the limited supply available in The Island. You Breakfast items , though is usually well stocked . For lunch and dinner , may we suggest trying other restaurant and bar on the Island .
